Mr. Mike’s Catering finally able to begin scheduling events

Terry Baker purchased Mr. Mike's in 2006. He said the company went 90 days without a catering job because of the pandemic.

CANTON Mr. Mike’s Catering has been in business in Canton since 1982 and has been it its current location at 2800 Fulton Dr. NW since 1992.

Owner Terry Baker purchased the company in 2006.

This year was the first time the company has went 90 consecutive days without a catering job. Baker said they are finally getting some calls to schedule events.

“If I didn’t own the building and all of the trucks, I probably wouldn’t have been able to stay in business,” Baker said. “My expenses for the past several months have been insurance and day-to-day expenses. All of my employees have been laid off since the day the shutdown was ordered.”

Baker said the catering company typically does 2,000 events a year including weddings, family events of sometimes 600 to 700 people, sports banquets for Perry and Jackson Local Schools, graduations, golf outings and other events. Since the shutdown, Mr. Mike’s has had more than 60 events canceled.

“Some of the weddings have been calling back in to get rescheduled. Some weddings have been rescheduled to next year. I haven’t called my employees back yet, some are still worried about coming back to work,” Baker said.

Baker said he does have a few events on the books for July, but business is not back to anywhere close to what it should be.

“We are down at least 40 percent right now. The events for August and September have not come back to what they should be at this point either,” Baker said.

Mr. Mike’s Catering has a full kitchen and prep area, but it doesn’t have its own venue to serve customers. Baker said the company is exclusive to a number of venues in the area. He said that the venues he normally works with are saying they are starting to see an uptick in reservations.

“It’s going to be hard for everyone to make up for what’s been lost,” Baker said. “I’m 72 years old and I never thought I’d be in this situation. I started working at Mr. Mike’s when it first started. I’m going to try to stay open. If we get shutdown again, I don’t know if I can keep it going.”

Mr. Mike’s Catering was started by Mike Santangelo in 1982. The company can customize menus for any type and size of event. The company works with a number of venues or halls including Meyers Lake Ballroom, Foltz Community Center, Spring Valley Golf Course, Louisville Eagles, McKinley Eagles, Willowdale Lake Country Club, Waters Edge Vineyard, Rivercrest Farm, Brookside Farms, Onesto Lofts and others.
