Canton is bidding to host the OHSAA state football finals for a third straight year this year.

Call it a no decision.

The Ohio High School Athletic Association’s board of directors did not take any action regarding the 2019 state football championships at Thursday’s monthly meeting, but there was a "positive vibe" about Canton's chances of hosting this year's games, according to a source familiar with the situation.

The OHSAA originally intended to host the finals in Columbus in 2019 and 2020, but Canton has recently emerged as the favorite for the 2019 games.

The OHSAA is still waiting for Canton to submit its final proposal, including the financial guarantee, before it makes the final decision. The next board of directors meeting is on Feb. 14, where the board is expected to review the attendance and financial reports for last year’s football tournament, including the four rounds of playoff games leading up to the finals.

Canton's Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium hosted the games in 2017 and 2018, while Columbus had the finals from 2014-16 at Ohio Stadium.

From 1990-2013, the games were held in Stark County every year and were split between Canton’s Fawcett Stadium and Massillon’s Paul Brown Tiger Stadium.
