A service will be held Saturday.

A service will be held Saturday to celebrate the life of longtime educator and local historian Richard L. McElroy.


McElroy died Friday at age 73. The service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Christ Presbyterian Church in Canton.


A Plain Township resident spent more than 40 years teaching and coaching in the North Canton City school system. He also taught at University of Mount Union and Malone University.


McElroy had written 14 books.


"He was such an incredible man," said Pam McElroy, his wife. "He is a presidential historian. He just lived history. He never stopped learning."


Born in Smithville, McElroy graduated from Carrollton High School. He obtained both a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree from Kent State University. McElroy was the recipient of numerous awards, such as the McKinley Presidential Library & Museum’s McKinley Award.


McElroy also served briefly on Canton City Council during the 1980s. A Republican, he represented the 8th Ward.


Along with his wife, McElroy is survived by his daughter, Rachael Knisely; sons, Matthew McElroy and Luke McElroy; four grandchildren and other relatives.
