LAKE TWP. During the regular monthly meeting, the Lake Local Board of Education heard from Superintendent Kevin Tobin that the district will be using remote learning through the end of the school year, per Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine’s recent order.

“We have a lot of logistical and other questions about the recent order,” Tobin said.

One of the issues the district needs to resolve is how to get all the belongs the students have left behind in their classrooms and lockers to them. Other issues involve turning in laptops and textbooks.

“We’ll work through everything to get this year completed and then plan for different scenarios for the fall,” Tobin said. “Planning for the district is certainly differently today than it was just two months ago. We’ll take it one day at a time and continue to communicate with parents as we go.”

Tobin told the board that students currently have a turn in rate of 85 percent for the work they are doing remotely.

• Approved a list of 261 students for graduation 2020. Tobin said the district has not yet canceled graduation set for May 31. He is waiting to see what the regulations will be for large gatherings before a decision will be made. He also said the district has a backup date of June 19. He added that whatever the district does to honor this year’s graduates, he will communicate the plans directly with parents and students.

• Approved handbooks for 2020-21 for Lake Primary, Elementary and Middle/High Schools.

• Accepted $2,000 from Advent Lutheran Church and $500 from Mr. and Mrs. Chris Neidert for the distribution of lunches to Lake Local students. Tobin told the board the donations for the lunch program is much appreciated because the district is currently spending around $1,000 a day for student lunches with no income coming in. He said for the 21 days the district has been serving lunches so far, it has cost $21,000, making donations for the lunch program much needed.
