The water main installation project along Riverside Avenue NW and Earl Road NW began in early February. Completion is planned for July.

MASSILLON Aqua Ohio has launched a new pipe replacement project on the city‘s northwest side to enhance water reliability.

The $1.6 million project broke ground with preliminary work on Feb. 3 along sections of Riverside Avenue NW and Earl Road NW, according to Jeff LaRue, a spokesman for Aqua Ohio. Some of that work included taking measurements for new pipe, along with tree and debris removal adjacent to the roads.

On Monday, workers were installing new, 24-inch diameter water main pipe on Riverside Avenue, just north of Medina Supply Co. The new water main will carry raw water from the company’s nine nearby wells to the water plant for chemical treatment and eventually customer consumption.

Overall, the project spans northwest Massillon and areas of Jackson and Perry townships. Final completion with 6,600 feet of new pipe is estimated for July.

“Right now, we only have one main line coming into the plant, and this project gives us a second one,” LaRue said. “More redundancy (within the water system) gives us extra reliability for the water coming into the facility.”

Improvements aim to isolate future waterline breaks and minimize any service interruptions at the Third Street NW facility, LaRue explained.

Traffic is to be maintained through the course of the project, but drivers in the area should use extra caution, LaRue said, explaining that one lane will be open at all times.

Contractor for the Aqua project is Dalton-based Wenger Excavating.

Overall, Aqua Ohio plans to invest $12.3 million in Stark Regional Division infrastructure improvements during 2020, said LaRue, adding that some projects overlap into neighboring counties.

Last year, Aqua conducted a $2.4 million effort to upgrade 60-year-old water pipe along a more than 2-mile stretch of Hills and Dales Road in Jackson Township. That project is completed except for replenishing vegetation, LaRue said.

“We’re coming back in spring to add some top soil and (grass) seeding,” he said.

Altogether, the company has plans for $53.4 million of water and wastewater improvements this year throughout Ohio.

Aqua Ohio serves approximately 37,000 customers in Massillon and Green, as well as Jackson and Perry townships.
