The officer suffered injuries in the escape attempt, according to jail records.
JACKSON TWP. Police say when they woke a Summit County man found "unresponsive" in his vehicle outside a store around 2:30 a.m. Monday, he tried to drive away with an officer in the car.
Stark County Jail records show Adam L. Richardson, 35, of 1568 Briarwood Lane in Green, also assaulted the officer, grabbed and twisting the officer's hand and fingers.
The officers had tried to rouse him using "several verbal commands" before he woke up and tried to drive away, according to the jail records.
The records do not say how far he was able to get before they stopped him, but he was arrested in the parking lot at 4572 Mega St. NW, the same address where they found him.
He was restrained, evaluated by Jackson Township Fire Department medics and taken to jail.
The officers also seized an undisclosed amount of cocaine.
Richardson was booked on charges of felony assault, cocaine possession, resisting arrest, driving under suspension, drug paraphernalia possession and two counts of OVI.
He remained behind bars Tuesday, held in in lieu of $54,000 bond pending a Massillon Municipal Court hearing.
Information about the officer's condition was not listed in the jail records.
