The carrier is increased service to Dulles International Airport. But two daily flights to Newark have been cut.
GREEN United Airlines will begin providing daily service from the Akron-Canton Airport to the Washington, D.C., market in May.
The airline will launch three daily flights to Dulles International Airport on May 8 using a 50-seat regional jet. The service replaces two daily United flights to Newark International Airport outside New York City.
United officials said the change is part of a strategic plan to shift some domestic routes away from the crowded Newark hub to Dulles. The airline hopes to "maximize the strengths of each hub and provide a more seamless travel experience," according to news release Friday announcing the change
Akron-Canton officials, while happy to add Dulles to its list of destinations, will talk with United about resuming service to Newark, said Ren Camacho, Akron-Canton president and chief executive officer.
United officials said the Dulles flights will open new options for travelers visiting the Washington area or traveling beyond. The route allows for connections to more than 30 international flights and nearly 270 domestic flights, the airline said.
Additional connections to southern destinations should appeal to travelers who use Akron-Canton, Camacho said. "We think the Dulles connection is a win for customers," he said.
United also offers daily flights from Akron-Canton to Chicago O'Hare and George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston.
Akron-Canton will maintain daily service to New York City through American Airlines, which offers a morning departure to LaGuardia International Airport.
American provides a morning flight to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. American's service to Washington National is geared toward travelers heading for the city, while United's Dulles service likely will serve as a connector for many travelers, Akron-Canton officials said. American also serves Chicago, Philadelphia and Charlotte, N.C., from Akron-Canton.
When United begins service to Dulles in May there will be 6 a.m., 10:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. departures from Akron-Canton. Flight-time is roughly 70 minutes. Flights leaving Dulles will arrive locally at 9:35 a.m., 1:45 p.m. and 6:20 p.m.
