This year's festival will feature music, traditional crafts, Henna art, and an all-day cricket tournament.
JACKSON TWP. "India Fest 2019," a celebration of Indian culture, will be held from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday at Fisher Park, 5879 Lake O' Springs Ave. NW.
The festival is sponsored by the India Association of Greater Canton.
"We've always done some cultural events, but we decided a couple of years ago to do a wider event, to invite everybody to come," said Anant Mathur, festival chairman.
Mathur said the first festival in 2017 drew more than 300. Last year's event was hit by a rain storm but still drew about 200 people.
This year's festival will feature music, Indian karaoke, Indian food vendors, traditional crafts, Henna art, and an all-day cricket tournament involving up to 10 teams.
"It's very popular," Mathur said of the tournament. "It draws people from outside of the area."
One of the world's most popular sports, cricket is lesser known in the U.S.
"It was an English sport," Mathur explained. "It's very popular in former Commonwealth countries like India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, but now, slowly, it's getting popular in other parts of the world."
Mathur said he hopes their festival grows as more people learn about it.
"The basic idea was to expose folks to the Indian culture," he said. "There's a large festival in Cleveland, but there was nothing in the Canton area. The idea was to bring something like that to the Canton area so people can appreciate the Indian culture. It's also a way to be a part of of the community."
Admission is free. To learn more, visit the festival's Facebook page.
