The garage and second floor of an Eastlynn Avenue NW home were damaged in a Friday afternoon fire. No one was injured.

JACKSON TWP. Neighbors pounded on the door to wake a sleeping resident as they eyed flames shooting from the garage area of a home in the 8600 block of Eastlynn Avenue NW.

The man was able to get out of the two-story house Friday afternoon. No one was injured in the blaze.

Eastlynn Avenue in the Hampton Hills neighborhood was closed for a few hours near Amherst Avenue NW. The fire was out by 4 p.m. though crews remained, clearing out the second floor.

Deputy Chief Tim Berczik said neighbors saw smoke coming from the garage area and went to investigate. They noticed flames on the outside of the house and pounded on the door to wake the man sleeping in the basement.

The neighbors grabbed a garden hose after calling 911 and tried unsuccessfully to put out the fire, which extended into the attic.

Firefighters arrived shortly thereafter and doused the flames.

Firefighters were being misted with water and a fan in the 90-degree heat.

The garage exterior was damaged as well as the interior of the second floor, Berczik said, noting utilities had been shut off. Residents were able to return to the home later that night.

It's unclear if the fire began outside of the home or inside, he said. The cause is under investigation.

Neighbors and family of Starlett Isles, who owns the house, gathered across the street of the home. Isles said she has a "tight-knit family" who came to show their support. They gathered beneath a shaded tree eating pizza after a neighbor brought over food.

Isles was not home when the fire started. She was visiting her sister in Canton at the time and rushed home.

She called to tell her son, Carlin Isles, also known as "Rugby's Fastest Man." Isles made it to the Olympic trials as a sprinter in 2012 and then became a breakout star at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio. He has been staying with his mother while he's on vacation.

Carlin Isles was in Cleveland when the fire began and headed back to the residence after he heard the news, Starlett Isles said.

Starlett Isles owns the SandPit Cafe & Lounge, 28 Penn Ave. SE in Massillon, and had a birthday party planned for later in the evening. Her birthday was Tuesday.

Even though her home caught fire, Isles was in good spirits and still planned to celebrate her birthday.
