JACKSON TWP. Basketball players filled the gym at the Paul & Carol David YMCA in Jackson Township on the evening of Feb. 28 to get expert instruction on improving their 3 vs. 3 skills on the court. Two of the Cleveland Cavs Academy for youth basketball were busy on the court helping the young players learn new ways to practice.
Cavs Academy Coaches Kendall Chones and Jonathan White, who each have both played basketball professionally in the states and abroad, led the clinics.
It wasn’t the first time the Cavs Academy has paid a visit.
“The YMCA is a great partner and we’re here several times a year; tonight is a two-hour clinic for boys and girls and it’s designed to help kids play better,” said Director of Fan Development, Kerry Woloszynek. “The kids learn so much from watching others play and when they play in front of expert coaches. There is a great fan base in the area.”
There were around 70 kids at the clinic. Woloszynek said she thought the turnout was so good because school districts just finished up their seasons and the kids were still wanting to play. This was the first time the 3 vs. 3 Skills Clinic was held at the Jackson YMCA.
“The Cleveland Cavaliers play a lot of 3-on-3 and its tough. We are happy to bring it the Jackson YMCA for the first time,” said Chones. “It’s a good way to teach kids spacing, ball handling and shooting. We like to encourage kids to play some of the elements and concepts we use on our team.
“It’s about learning to play basketball and having greater responsibility on offense and greater accountability on defense.”
Chones said that Jackson High School alumni Josh Egner and his father, Gary, who coached at Ohio University and Findlay, were assisting with the clinic that evening.
According to www.cavsyouth.com, the Cleveland Cavaliers offer a variety of youth basketball programs for players of all skill levels including camps, clinics, leagues, tournaments and individual and small group training. At times, select Cavaliers players will visit certain programs and interact with participants. For more details about youth basketball and other kids’ programs, visit the website.
