JACKSON TWP. Kent State University at Stark held its seventh annual Turkey Trot 5K Run and Kid’s Fun Run on Nov. 17.
The weather was much better this year than in a couple of past years. Last year, the morning had heavy rain. A few years ago, just as the race was ending, the roads began to ice over. This year, the morning was dry, but it was cold.
Stacie Humm, recreation wellness and programs and facilities manager, said the race is held to help collect food items to donate to the local food bank.
"Every year, we ask each of the registered runners to bring a nonperishable food item to donate to the Stark County Hunger Task Force or to make a cash donation," said Humm. "Our attendance is down this year. We have 150 runners and we had eight for the Kid’s Fun Run. There are a lot of Turkey Trot runs around the area this year plus other runs throughout the year and I think that has affected our attendance."
Runners kicked off their race at 9 a.m. sharp. They ran around the Kent State Stark Campus twice and around the parking once before crossing the finish line. Humm said record time on the course is 15:35.
The top male and female adult runners won a gift card for a free turkey.
