Visit Canton is teaming with area breweries and beer sellers for a passport tour.

Visit Canton is teaming with Lunar Cow Publishing on a passport brew tour of some of the area's craft beer purveyors.

Talks of a Stark County brew tour broke down earlier this year when plans called for including locations that serve craft beers but don't brew their own beer. For that reason, some Stark County brewers opted out of an earlier Visit Canton proposal for a beer tour.

Visit Canton and Lunar Cow are partnering on the Passport Brew Tour, which includes breweries and restaurants in Stark, Summit, Tuscarawas and five other counties. Also promoting the tour are the Tuscarawas County and Wayne County convention and visitors bureaus, and the Holmes County Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Bureau.

The tour begins Sept. 1 and runs through the end of the year. Beer enthusiasts are encouraged to visit all of the participating businesses and collect stamps. Once stamps are collected from every location, passports can be used to claim a Passport Brew Tour T-shirt.

The official brew tour passports will be available at each of the participating businesses. Canton Brewing Co., at 120 Third St. NW, is serving as host brewery for the tour and will be the place where tour passports are redeemed for T-shirts.

Increased interest in craft beers and the addition of breweries in Stark County fueled the idea of organizing a beer tour, said Tonja Marshall, Visit Canton's vice president of marketing.

Benjamin Harris, president of Lunar Cow, said the tour helps promote local breweries, brings together beer enthusiasts and provides information about the area.

The Passport Brew Tour will use an app developed by Lunar Cow to direct people to participating business and provide added information about interesting sites in the region. The app can be accessed through the Passport Brew Tour website, The tour also has a Facebook page.

Besides Canton Brewing, other Stark County businesses participating in the tour include Fat Heads Brewery in Plain Township, Muskellunge Brewing Co. and The Crush House at Gervasi Vineyard in Canton, Shale Brewing Co. and BJ's Brewhouse in Jackson Township, Sandy Springs Brewing Co. in Minerva, and Paradigm Shift Craft Brewery and Jen's Place Craft Beer Taproom in Massillon.

Rounding out the list are Lockport Brewery and Sublime Smoke Fine BBQ & Craft Brew in Bolivar, Hoodletown Brewing Co. in Dover, JAFB Wooster Brewery in Wayne County, Mucky Duck Brewery in Green, Thirsty Dog Brewing Co. in Akron, Magic City Brewing Co. in Barberton, Uniontown Brewing Co. in Ashland, Laxton Hollow Brewing Works in Lexington, and Wooly Pig Farm Brewery in Fresno.
