Republic Steel is ramping up operations and looking for 50 workers. It has scheduled a hiring in Jackson Township event for July 26.
CANTON Republic Steel has scheduled a hiring program for July 26 as the company tries to fill 50 open jobs at its Eighth Street NE complex.
The company is hiring an extra shift and already has added 25 employees this year. The moves are in response to increased demand in the market, Elizabeth Evans, executive vice president, general counsel and secretary for Republic, wrote in an email.
In late June, the company said that during the last 18 months it had invested more than $12 million at its facilities in order to meet increased demand, which has risen because of recent steel tariffs.
The company invested more than $6 million in its Canton melt shop to increase production to 75,000 tons per month from 40,000 tons per month.
Republic expects to restart an idled rolling mill at its Lorain facility in September and said it will restart its electric arc furnace as customer orders dictate. The company expects to hire 80 people in Lorain. It also has invested at its Lackawanna, N.Y., factory to increase production.
Thursday's hiring sessions start at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. in the Courtyard Marriot at 4375 Metro Circle NW, Jackson Township. Applicants should arrive prepared to take a written test and to interview with a hiring manager. Applicants who pass the test, which takes about 60 minutes, will be interviewed on the spot.
Republic is looking for labor technicians, mechanical maintenance technicians, maintenance electrical technicians and crane operators. The labor and crane operator positions have a base pay of $19, plus incentives, while maintenance jobs have a base pay of $23.22, plus incentives. Benefits packages include health insurance, Steelworkers Pension Trust, optional 401k, profit sharing and shift premiums.
In a notice about the hiring event, Republic said changes in the steel industry are creating new opportunities. "If you're are a hard-working team player and interested in a great opportunity, we want you on our team," the ad states.
In the June announcement, Jaime Vigil, Republic's president and chief executive officer, said the company's mills have capacity to supply the market.
"We've been preparing our facilities to accommodate an increase in demand and are ready to take on new customers who want to buy from a U.S. manufacturer," Vigil said in the release.
Republic supplies special bar quality steel, including hot rolled and cold finished bars, cold heading rod and wire, and leaded steel bars. Based in Canton, the company has facilities in Massillon, Lorain, Solon and Lackawanna. Republic has 850 employees, with 446 working in Canton and 65 in Massillon.
Since 2005 Republic has been part of Industrias CH, S.A de C.V. (ICH), a steel producer and processor based in Mexico City. Republic Steel is a subsidiary of Grupo Simec, Guadalajara, Mexico, of which ICH is the majority owner.
