Superhero 5K

The Run4Kids Superhero 5K will be at 8 p.m. July 13 on a course at Stark State College and Kent State University at Stark. Runners are encouraged to wear their favorite superhero costume. Superhero capes can be ordered at registration (child-size only, $10). Check-in begins at 6 p.m. at Stark State Business and Entrepreneurial Building, 6200 Frank Ave. NW. A free kid’s run kicks off at 7:15 p.m. followed by the main 5K race at 8 p.m. Register at For additional information, go to or Registration is $35 for those 18 and older; $30 for those 17 and younger; and $120 for a five-runner team. The Fun Run is free for those 12 and younger.

Pirates Day

Portage Lakes Kiwanis Pirate Days Pancake Breakfast will be held from 7 to 11 a.m. July 14 at 725 Portage Lakes Drive. The cost is $6 for adults, kids 10 and under $3 and kids 2 and under free. Following the breakfast, the family friendly Kiwanis Pirate Day will be from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Portage Lakes State Park swim beach, 655 Latham Lane. Pirates of the Rusty Cutlass Swashbuckling will entertain, free pontoon boat rides to and from Pirate Island, pirate attire highly encouraged for prizes and participation. Get Out & Play

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 14, kids take over Historic Downtown Hartville for the 5th Annual Get Out & Play block party. More than 40 community organizations, churches and businesses come together to put on this super summer fest. The street and sidewalks are filled with games, crafts, and giggles. Activities, for toddlers through pre-teens, include Touch-a-Truck, mascot appearances, photo booth, a pop-up market, face painting and jump rope making. Sign up for an open mic talent show in the square. Downtown shops and restaurants will be open. Parking, admission and most activities are free.
