Light up the night
Learn how fireflies light up the summer sky with the Metro Parks Nature’s Fireworks program from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. tonight at Goodyear Heights Metro Park/Pioneer Area, 550 Frazier Ave. After a short presentation, participants will take a walk to look for fireflies and other creatures of the night. Paddle on Summit Lake
Paddle in the "Heart of Akron" on Summit Lake from 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday. Explore nature by water while discovering the marvelous history of the community which surrounds the lake. Minimum age is 13; ages 13 to 17 must be with an adult participant. Wear closed-toe shoes and be able to swim. Bring water, sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses and wear clothes that can get wet. Cost is $15 per person and includes loan of kayak, paddle, life jacket and instruction. Register in advance at summitmetroparks.org. For information, call 330-865-8065. The Run4Kids Superhero 5K will be held at 8 p.m. July 13 at Stark State College and Kent State University at Stark. Runners are encouraged to wear their favorite superhero costume. Superhero capes can be ordered at preregistration (child size only, $10) or purchased on race day. Check-in begins at 6 p.m. at Stark State Business and Entrepreneurial Building, 6200 Frank Ave. NW, Jackson Twp. A free kids run kicks off at 7:15 p.m. followed by the main 5K race at 8 p.m. Register at OhioChallengeSeries.enmotive.com/events/register/run4kids-superhero-5k.
