The Stark County Transportation Improvement District on Monday reviewed plans for widening last stretch in Jackson Township.
JACKSON TWP. Local, county and state officials still plan to widen a two-lane stretch of Fulton Drive NW, but it will be several years before the work begins.
Fulton Drive, which is designated at state Route 627, narrows from five lanes to three and then two just west of Brunnerdale Avenue NW. It remains two lanes for roughly one mile until reaching Foxboro Avenue NW and the Nobles Pond shopping area west of Wales Avenue NW.
Township and county officials formally began working together in 2010 to get the stretch widened. Cost for the total project is estimated at just over $6 million, and that doesn't include the cost to buy the land needed to widen the road. Most of the money will come from the state.
On Monday, the Stark County Transportation Improvement District board reviewed plans for the project. Members agreed to break the construction work into two segments, each costing $3 million. Initial work will be to widen the road from Brunnerdale to Governors Avenue NW.
Making the change, which involves finalizing drawings and separating the plans into two segments, will cost $52,079. The money will come from $800,000 that Jackson Township has allocated toward the project.
Ryan Hutson, who is with IBI, an engineering consulting firm hired by the TID, said efforts to acquire the right of way should be able to start in July 2020 as part of the state's 2021 fiscal year. Hutson said the state has construction money for the project built into its 2022-2023 budget.
Fulton Drive NW will be widened to five lanes, with two carrying traffic in each direction and center turn lane. It also will have curbs, gutters and improved drainage.
A big change involves reconstruction of the spot where Yost Street NW intersects with Fleetwood Avenue and Fulton Drive NW. That five-way intersection will become a four-way intersection between Fleetwood and Fulton. Yost will become a cul-de-sac, but a new street will connect Yost and Fulton at a spot west of the Fleetwood intersection.
The stretch between Brunnerdale and Foxboro is the last piece in a string of Fulton Drive NW widening projects that have been ongoing since the 1990s. The section between Everhard Road and Brunnerdale Avenue NW was widened to five lanes in 2001, while the Fulton Drive and Wales Avenue NW intersection was widened in 2008.
