Lakemore United Methodist Church (LUMC) is planning a fun filled agenda for children at its upcoming Summer Fun Program.

It was 21 years ago that the congregation of LUMC  began the two-month long summer program with the focus on children of the community. The program is free to area children and their families with the exception of occasional $3 to $5 fees for some field trips. Included on some of those trips are food, bus transportation and entrance fees. The church covers the rest of the cost for the fun loaded field trips through fundraising and donations from church members and local businesses.

Program costs run from $8,000 to $12,000 a year depending on the number of children who attend and the number of trips and programs provided. Each child receives a Summer Fun T-shirt, a certificate and a bible.

The program runs three days per week for six weeks during June and July and is for children K through 6. Throughout the six weeks, the program will see 95 to 124 children at any given time.

The days spent at the church begin with indoor games, then a devotion, lunch and station groups, crafts and more. The last day of the program family members join in for food and carnival activities and the children sing during a Sunday church service with the families, children and volunteers enjoying a pizza party after the service.

Field trips usually include visits to the Akron Zoo, Pump It Up, bowling, roller skating, golf lessons, miniature golf, a RubberDucks game, a Cleveland Indians game, McKinley Museum, Seiberling Naturealm, Perfect Balance and Amazone.

Directors are Julie Pennock and Meg Lee. Pennock has been with the program two years, is a member of the church and was a volunteer before she became director. Lee has served as the preschool assistant in the church's preschool program for several years. Linda Pitman, coordinator of volunteers and community relations for the church, helps to get the program up and running with donations, coordinating business involvement and volunteers, helping to make the experience safe and positive for all children.

The deadline for registration and medical forms for Summer Fun to be turned in is June 8. Children are to bring a sack lunch. Beverages and snacks are provided. The days are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. the weeks of June 13,20, 27, and July 11, 18 and 25. The last week the program is held on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.

The idea behind the program is for children to make friends and participate in games, crafts, stories, activities and field trips throughout the two month program.
