Kathleen Sommers will become Stark State College's new dean of health and public services on March 13.

JACKSON TWP.  Kathleen Sommers has been hired as Stark State College’s new dean of health and public services.

Sommers, who will begin the new job March 13, fills a position that has been covered by an interim dean since 2015 when former dean Daniel McDermott left Stark State. Sommers, who will earn $109,000 a year, will oversee teaching and learning, delivery and scheduling of different course modalities for degree and non-degree seeking students enrolled in health and public services courses at Stark State.

Sommers’s career has included teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in nursing, serving as program coordinator of the licensed practical nurse programs at the Wayne County Schools Career Center and serving as assistant director of career technical and adult education for the Ohio Department of Education, according to a release from Stark State.

Other positions at the state education department have included a consultant in public safety, state coordinator of college tech prep and assistant director of the trade and industrial section of career technical and adult workforce education.

Sommers has served on the Governor’s Workforce Development Council and was a commissioner on the Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission. She recently worked with the Higher Learning Commission as chairman of Mount Carmel College of Nursing’s Assessment Committee.

Sommers holds a doctorate of educational leadership and a master of business administration from Ashland University and a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Kent State University. She is a registered nurse in Ohio and Minnesota.

Her recognitions include the Excellence in Nursing Award from Mount Carmel Health System, the Ohio Attorney General’s Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission Citizen of the Year Award, named a National Education Partner by the 3M Corporation and Society of Manufacturing Engineering, a Star Award Employee of the Year by the Ohio Department of Education, Visionary Educational Leadership from National Project Lead The Way and Quality Star Award of the Year from Aultman Hospital.
