A memorial service for Summit County Executive Russ Pry will be at 10 a.m. Aug. 13 at the John S. Knight Center in downtown Akron. Following that service, the celebration of his life will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Tangiers on West Market Street in Highland Square.
At Pry's request, there will be no funeral service or calling hours.
Pry, a Mogadore native, died Sunday at the age of 58 from the effects of colon cancer. He had been diagnosed with the disease in June and just days before his death, Pry had announced he would not seek a new term due his health issues. He had been the county executive since 2007.
A Kent State University and University of Akron Law School graduate, Pry, a Democrat who was the former chairman of the Summit County party, is remembered by his peers, including U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Cleveland) and his wife, Connie Schultz.
"Connie and I are saddened to hear of Russ' passing and offer our deepest sympathies to his family and the Summit County community," Brown said in a news release. "His loss will be felt by all those whose lives were made better by his service to his community."
Former Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland - who is running against Republican incumbent Rob Portman for the other U.S. Senate seat - called Pry a great leader and a champion of his community.
"Summit County, the Ohio Democratic Party and all of Ohio have lost a truly great leader," Strickland, a fellow Democrat, said in a news release. "Russ will be remembered as a true champion for Ohio families and someone who worked tirelessly to improve his community, and our state. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and I wish them peace."
Summit County President Ilene Shapiro will be sworn in as interim county executive until the Summit County Democratic Central Committee meets to appoint a replacement at 7 p.m. Aug. 11 at North High School to serve the balance of Pry's term, which runs through December. The Central Committee will also nominate its candidate for Executive for the November general election at the meeting.
