GREEN After receiving bids from five contractors for its 2016 road resurfacing project, City Council unanimously approved a resolution awarding the contract to North Canton-based Superior Paving & Materials, Inc.
Council members suspended the rules to pass the resolution, awarding the contract to Superior based on its lowest and best bid of $1.9 million.
The city received bids from Superior and four other contractors – Northstar Asphalt of North Canton, Stow based Karvo Paving Companies, Barbicas Construction Company of Akron, and Central Allied Enterprise of Canton. The bids were opened June 17 and ranged from Superior’s low bid, to a high of $2.4 million.
Council also formally accepted an $11,000 donation from the Green Veterans Memorial Park organization to help finance a first responders memorial, upon the second reading of the legislation.
Councilman At-large, Chris Humphrey, explained that the resolution is required to both accept the donation and create a fund for it.
"The (finance) committee recommends we pass this on second reading, upon the notion that if someone offers you money you should take it before they change their mind," Humphrey said.
Appropriation made official
A resolution establishing a pay range for the position of Seasonal Laborer I for the calendar year 2015 was also approved.
Ward 4 Councilman and Council Vice President Skip Summerville called the resolution a housekeeping matter, explaining that the city paid out $8,383 last year, but failed to draw up legislation to appropriate the funds.
