Trustees will hold two community meetings in June to address a text amendment and to seek input about a plan that could lead to the township contracting with a single trash hauler.
The first meeting will be at 9 a.m. Saturday to seek public input on the potential of moving to a single trash hauler. The second meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. June 16 to address address a text amendment that was approved during the May 25 Zoning Commission meeting. It is for property at 1016 Canton Road and the text changes would allow for Towpath Trail High School to add items such as a fence and a drop-off and pick-up location for students.

n Two Springfield High School students received scholarships, which were presented by the trustees.
Anastasia Fitzsimmons has a 4.0 GPA and has been involved in school activities, including president of National Honor Society, class representative, marching band, student council, bowling, Haromano and Jazz Band. Her hobbies include reading, hiking, painting, music and traveling. Her teachers describe her as a dedicated student and diligent in her studies. She has been accepted into The Ohio State University and intends to double major in International Relations and Arabic language.
Asya Kalamajka has a 4.0 GPA and is involved in school activities, including National Honor Society, Haromano, student and class councils, is a Spartan mentor and participates in Bible study. Scrapbooking, dancing, reading, volunteering and yoga are some of her hobbies and interest. She has worked for Pence Brothers Siding and babysits. She says her uncle influenced her life in extraordinary ways. She has been accepted to attend Kent State University to study nursing.
Both were presented with $1,000 scholarships.
n Trustees approved an amended motion for the police department regarding the purchase of a new Ford Interceptor SUV police cruiser for $25,700. Trustee Dean Young said due to the financial situation, the township is purchasing one cruiser this year. Normally, trustees would purchase two new vehicles. Trustees also approved the purchase of all equipment for the cruiser from Fallsway Equipment Co. Inc. for a total of $13,618.72.
n Dawson Applegate was hired by the Parks Department as part-time summer help at the rate of $9 an hour. Trustees also approved the retroactive rehire of part-time summer laborers Kyle Stevenson, Tyler Feciuch, Mitchell Johns and Triston Sprague with a pay raise of $.20 an hour.
n Approved the purchase of playground equipment for the Parks Department from GameTime through U.S. Communities, a national government purchasing cooperative for an amount of $128,478.74. A minimum deposit of $19,555 is due at the time of the order. It will be used for the Lakefront Park Playground Grant Project Agreement with Natureworks. The grant through the Department of Natural Resources will cover 75 percent of the cost.
n The property located at 1821 Myersville Road was deemed a nuisance because of trash, debris and mowing and abatement will be initiated.
n Resident Jerry Halman spoke about an area on Margaret Street. The site is used for fill from the township, but Halman said other things are being dumped there as well that do not qualify as landfill items.
Young said they would look into it.
n Peggy Henthorn asked for help for people in the area who want to clean up their properties but cannot afford the expense of hauling items away. She suggested a couple of dumpsters provided by the township in the areas where needed.
n The Rock the Docks Festival will be held June 24, 25 and 26.
n The Springfield Rocks concert series begins at 7 p.m., Saturday at the Vince Mealy Bicentennial Gazebo at Lakefront Park on Canfield Road. For a list of bands and dates visit the township website, www.springfieldtownsip.us.
The regular scheduled June 9 trustees meeting has been cancelled and the regular meeting will be held June 16 at 6 p.m. with the public hearing to follow at 6:30 p.m. The meeting, as well as Saturday's community input for a single trash hauler will be held at Town Hall in the Administration Building on Canfield Road.
