The annual City of New Franklin Memorial Day Parade will step off at 10 a.m. Monday from Grace Bible Church, 5781 Manchester Road, and will feature a City of New Franklin 10th anniversary float and and new Mutt Strut event.
New Franklin Mayor Al Bollas said this will be the largest parade to date. It will travel south from Grace Bible Church, down Manchester Road (Route 93) to Nimisila Road, then west on Nimisila Road to the Manchester Cemetery.
A remembrance service will be held at Manchester Cemetery at the conclusion of the parade. WKYC Channel 3 News Anchor and Manchester High School graduate, Sara Shookman, will emcee the service.
David Adams is serving as this year's Grand Marshal. Adams has been a New Franklin resident since 1983 and he and his wife, Sheila, have three children, Matthew Nicole and Stephanie. He is a retired E9 Command Sergeant Major from the U.S. Army after 39 years of service. He has earned many military awards, including the Bronze Star Medal.
New Franklin City Patrolman Andrew Dilbeck, accompanied by K-9 Officer Chase, will be the keynote speaker. American Legion Post #566 will provide a 21-gun salute.
"There is quite an assortment of groups who have already registered," said Christine Lippincott, an accounting/administrative assistant for the city. "In addition to our city police, fire and road vehicles, there will be several military vehicles from the Ohio Veterans Memorial Park and also from Disabled American Veterans (DAV), as well as a scooter club, a civil war re-enactment group, a couple of 4-H clubs, the Manchester High School Marching Band, various sports teams, cheerleaders and more."
New Franklin City Council members will ride the 10th anniversary float.
The Mutt Strut is new this year and will feature pooches and their people, dressed in patriotic gear. Bil-Jac is supplying treats to those entrants in partnership with America's VetDogs, which you can find more info about at vetdogs.com
Kids can enter a bicycle decorating contest and a go-kart decorating contest, however, no four wheeler vehicles are allowed. Prizes will be awarded for best bikes, best go-karts, best floats and best vintage vehicles.
