SPRINGFIELD TWP. Parks and Recreation Director Doug Foltz, presented three signs that will be placed along the Spartan Trail to identify the three sections of the trail – the Lakefront,Tri-County and Springfield High School paths.
Foltz said the signs, as well as 15 smaller signs, were purchased with Summit County Public Health Grant funds. Foltz also said the project hike-and-bike trail project will will completed in three phases . It will connect at Springfield High School, follow behind the Tri-County Plaza and connect to Canton Road in Lakemore and behind a neighborhood area. The path will become the Lakefront Path along Canfield Road. The Lakefront area is close to being completed and the Tri-County Plaza area work will begin in the summer.
Trustees gave approval for the police department to apply for the Local Government Safety Capital Grant program which would help with the purchase new radios. The grant amount being requested is $121,889.93. If approved for the grant, the township’s cost for the radios would be $13,543.33.
Also approved for the police department was the appointment of James Hofus and Carl Blasdel as reserve police officers.
For the road department, approval was given to Road Superintendent Ted Weinsheimer to apply for a Federal Emergency Management Agency Grant (FEMA) under the Pre-disaster Mitigation Assistance Competitive Grant Program and the Flood Mitigations Assistance Grant. The monies would help to address some problem areas. The township would purchase properties to turn them into open land.
The J. Bowers Construction Co. was approved to repair the clerestory window leaks in the town hall in an amount not to exceed $21,859.79.
For the Zoning Department the property at 1124 Crestline Dr. was deemed as a nuisance and abatement was initiated.
Trustees approved Gary Older's position on the Zoning commission. His term begins May 20 and run through May 20, 2020.
Trustees gave approval for the fiscal officer to advertise for an assistant at the rate of $12.50. The assistant position is for 24 hours a week.
Also approved was a settlement of a pending litigation case known as Jacobs vs. Springfield Township which pertained to a maintenance issue of a road.
Foltz said the summer concert series will be held on Fridays at 7 p.m. in the Vincent J. Mealy Bicentennial Gazebo at Lakefront Park on Canfield Road. The slate of bands is almost complete and the first concert will be held June 3 with Rudy and the Professionals. Sp
Master Gardener Jan Becker will present “Early Garden Strategies” at 7 p.m. April 6 at the Senior Community Center, 2491 Canfield Road. This is part two in the garden series and Foltz said they have been well attended.
