A new place to relax with friends, enjoy great food and craft beers and spirits has come to New Franklin with the opening of the Caston & Main Brew Yard.

Owners Ron and Sharon Robinson wanted to offer a place that was cozy and not a sports bar, where families could gather for a relaxing evening and enjoy fresh, made-from-scratch appetizers and sandwiches. Visitors can eat at rustic bench tables or lounge on leather couches.

The brewery takes it’s name from its location at 5010 South Main Street in Akron, right at the corner of Caston and Main.

“We have had a great response and see customers from Akron, Jackson Township and Massillon,” Robinson said, adding the restaurant has been open since Aug. 18.

It took six months to transform the former D&B Nimisila Gardens bar into the brew yard.  Robinson did keep the original horseshoe wooden bar and checkered linoleum floor. This summer he plans to add an outside patio with seating for 40 and a fire pit.

“I want it to be a first-class place, mid-scale for the area,” he added.

Customers can choose to sample from more than 40 craft beers from around Ohio including Columbus, Toledo, Millersburg and Strongsville. Regional coast-to-coast brews are also featured.

General Manager Chelsea Thornsley said customers can enjoy featured drafts daily, such as Brewkettle, from a Millersburg Amish-owned brewery; the Scenic Brewing Co. of Canton; Four String Bass and the Columbus Brewing Co., both of Columbus. Once customers have tasted a favorite, they can take home a craft beer in a 64-ounce growler that keeps the beer fresh.

In addition, customers can enjoy the finest scotches, bourbons, meads, wines and ciders. Thornsley said many of those served are not normally found in this area.

“Customers enjoy the tastings and atmosphere,” Thornsley said.

Robinson noted that Thornsley is the expert on the craft brews and spirits.  A bourbon and bacon tasting will be held in February. The date will be announced on the website.

Live entertainment is featured every other Tuesday, with varied types of music by acoustic musicians.

Menu items includes appetizers called shareables that range from brew yard meatballs and  pork tacos to Brewschetta and brew cheese pretzel bites. Chef's features include a variety of sliders every Wednesday, such a Chorizzo, BLT and chicken salad. Main fare includes a Guiness bratwurst sandwich, a Caston Club, a roasted beef Philly and a hot Italian sub. Customers can choose from four salads, including a chicken and goat cheese with cranberries.

All menu items are made with fresh Ohio meats, cheese and veggies, Robinson said.

Caston & Main is open 4 to 11 p.m. Tuesday though Wednesday and 4 p.m. to  a.m. Thursday through Sunday. It is closed Sunday and Monday.
