Ratchet and Clank are back!
IGN lifted the lid on a new traditional Ratchet and Clank game coming to the PS3 this year. The title will be called Ratchet & Clank: Into the Nexus. Into the Nexus will see the series return to its roots as an action platformer. Insomniac had been experimental in its last two releases in the series All 4 One and Full Frontal Assault. I always enjoyed the core games in this series. The writing was always top notch and it was the type of humor that could be enjoyed by players of all ages. The game is available this fall is just $30. The fact that the PS4 is also scheduled to launch this holiday probably accounts for the lower price. Battlefield 4 will be Kinected
Gamespot says that Battlefield 4 will have Kinect functionality when it launches for the X-Box One this November. It is not known at this time what the Kinect will be used for but Battlefield developer DICE makes it crystal clear that it will be used in ways that are designed to support the experience, not make it a full-on motion game. That’s good news for everybody involved. My guess is that the Kinect functionality will be some type of voice commands for the single player campaign. I wouldn’t mind the ability to yell at the tv to call in support during the single player campaign myself. I don’t know how much of that DICE could add to multiplayer. I could think of a couple areas in multiplayer that Kinect would fit off the top of my head. Maybe you could use the Kinect to navigate the communication rose with voice commands or use voice commands for calling in support actions while in commander mode. I can’t think of many other places where Kinect functionality would fit in multiplayer.
Microsoft heads to Comic Con
X-Box One will be putting in an appearance at San Diego Comic Con next week. Attendees will be able to get their hands on Ryse: Son of Rome, Dead Rising 3 and Killer Instinct on the show floor from July 18-July 21. Microsoft will also be holding interactive panels for the X-Box One, the Halo Franchise, Ryse and Dead Rising 3. The full schedule is available on Larry Hryb’s blog (http://majornelson.com/2013/07/09/xbox-comic-con-2013-schedule/). Hryb is the X-Box Live Director of Programming.
Old Dog, New Trick
Nintendo might have something big up its sleeve for 2014. Super Mario Brothers and Zelda creator Shigeru Miyamoto is apparently working on a new franchise (http://www.gamespot.com/news/miyamoto-teases-new-franchise-for-2014-6411236). No details are available. I think it’s great that Miyamoto is still working on games. He is an innovator and any new idea from him is worth at least hearing about. The problem that Miyamoto has and the problem that Nintendo as a whole has right now is they have nothing for 2013. The Wii U doesn’t look like a terrible piece of hardware but there are no games for it out right now. Mario Kart 8, Super Mario 3D World and a new Super Smash Brothers won’t launch until 2014 at the earliest. This year, Nintendo has Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze and a Legend of Zelda: Windwaker HD remake coming but I wonder if its enough right now. The release of the PS4 and the X-Box One are going to dominate the conversation this winter but it would be nice to see Nintendo have something to talk about themselves. They could really use some positives considering how quickly third party publishers are abandoning the Wii U (http://www.gamespot.com/news/pachter-warns-wii-u-will-finish-a-distant-third-behind-ps4-and-xbox-one-6411096). More competition is better for everybody. I would like to see Nintendo compete again but I just don’t think they are going to have it in them this time around. The goal now isn’t to compete, I think it’s just to survive. If Ubisoft stops supporting Nintendo, you are pretty much going to be down to the system having to support itself on first party software. That first party software is great but it also takes a ton of time to develop for Nintendo. The commitment to quality is admirable but to stay relevant the company is going to have to get some titles out the door somehow or this isn’t going to end well.
