  • The city of Canton and the JR Coleman Community Renovation Corp. signed a $145,000 contract for streetscape improvements on the Mahoning Road Corridor.
The contract is a collaborative undertaking between the city and JR Coleman.
“This will be the first visible sign of progress in an overall $20 million dollar project that includes support from other parties such as SARTA and the Stark Community Foundation,” said Tom Thompson, executive director at JR Coleman.
Funding for this phase of the project is from a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) awarded to Canton, according to Julie Sparks, director of special projects at JR Coleman and project manager for the Mahoning Road Corridor.
“Because these are CDBG funds, we not only get to improve and enhance the look of our community, but also create and-or retain jobs,” Sparks said.
She said CDBG requires that 51 percent of the jobs will be held by or made available to low- and moderate-income people.
Finalizing the engineering and bid documents and then advertising for contractors should occur this summer. Construction work is scheduled to begin in the fall.
