Canton Township firefighters are not receiving pay increases in the first year of a new labor contract.
Township firefighters are not receiving any pay increase during the first year of a recently approved three-year labor contract.
The new contract between township trustees and the Canton Township International Association of Fire Fighters Local 3676 expires March 31, 2015. It took effect early in April.
“There is a wage freeze with one year,” Chief Scott McKibben said. “There is an option of reopening the contract in one year to talk about wages. If we don’t do it next year, then it will be year-to-year.”
The annual salary for a beginning firefighter-paramedic remains at $39,500.
“We have not had any additional tax money (for fire protection) since 2001,” township Trustee Christopher Nichols said. “Everybody just recognizes that things are getting pretty tight.”
The bargaining unit represents 11 rank-and-file firefighter-paramedics within the Canton Township Fire Department.
