“Me and Jason were in another band, it just didn’t work out,” vocalist-guitarist Chris Manse says.
Apparently the sound wasn’t quite there. “Have you ever seen a cat die?” is bassist Jason Shaffner’s vivid description.
The friends pressed forward. “One day, I decided to make my own music,” Manse says. “I hear melodies in my head. I started singing last year and writing lyrics.”
“The words come from Chris’ love life!” Shaffner says, causing the entire band to laugh.
Asked to define the music of Motion, guitarist Mark Tschantz says, “Psychedelic grunge.”
    “Relaxed,” says drummer Jacob Marion.
“We’ve heard everything from Coldplay to ‘I just can’t place it,’” Manse says.
“Just a good sound,” says keyboardist Julia Null, who was inspired to start playing piano by a Japanese exchange student who lived with her family.
Shaffner got his first guitar when he was 3, then later switched to bass because, “I couldn’t find a good bass player to jam with!”
Asked to preview Motion’s debut stage performance, Manse says, “We’re gonna try to not stand still.”
Schantz, who started playing guitar at age 10 after hearing the Beatles,  has the final word: “When we go home we like to put on spandex pants and dance.” (He’s joking.)
