  • WALSH UNIVERSITY
    Sunday, on the lawn in the center of campus
    Graduating: 422 undergraduate and graduate students
    Speaker: Professional golfer Renee Powell, golf pro at Clearview Golf Course in East Canton, was the second black woman to play on the LPGA tour. Her topic will be “Hold True to Your Values.”
    Past notable speaker: Richard Celeste in 1982, who later that year was elected governor.
    KENT STATE UNIVERSITY, Kent
    May 3 and 4, MAC Center
    Graduating: 4,375 students
    Speakers: Three undergraduate commencements: Jeff Richmond, American composer, actor, director, and husband of Tina Fey; Jeff Hoffman, founder of Priceline; Larry Armstrong, CEO of Ware Malcomb, a national design firm. Advanced degree commencement: Rebecca O. Bagley, CEO of NorTech, a development organization working to revitalize Northeast Ohio.
    Past notable speakers: Donna Shalala, former Sec. of Health and Human Services; Tom Batiuk, cartoonist, creator of Funky Winkerbean; Mark Mothersbaugh of band Devo.
    MALONE UNIVERSITY
    May 4, at Faith Family Church, Jackson Township
    Graduating: 657 undergraduate and graduate students
    Speaker: The Rev. Samuel Rodriguez, president of the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference, representing 40,000 churches. Has spoken in the White House, to Congress, on national television; currently serves on President Obama’s Task Force on Fatherhood.
    Past notable speaker: David Rawson, ambassador to Rwanda, whose heroic efforts in that country prompted “60 Minutes” to do a profile on him. A “60 Minutes” crew attended the commencement to film Rawson’s address.
    KENT STATE UNIVERSITY AT STARK
    May 10, Umstattd Performing Arts Hall
    Graduating: More than 145
    Speaker: Merle D. Griff, founder of SarahCare Senior Solutions, and author of “Linkages,” a book on intergenerational programs.
    Past notable speakers: State Sen. Scott Oelslager, Stark County Common Pleas Judge Lee Sinclair.
    UNIVERSITY OF AKRON
    May 10, 11, 12, E.J. Thomas Performing Arts Hall
    Graduating: Approximately 2,950 students
    Speaker: Luis Proenza, president of the university, will speak at each of the five ceremonies, and has done so since 1999.  
    UNIVERSITY OF MOUNT UNION
    May 11, on the lawn in front of Chapman Hall
    Graduating: 466 undergraduates and 31 graduate students
    Speaker: Matt Darrah, executive vice president of North American Operations for Enterprise, and a Mount Union graduate, will speak on “Setting Yourself Apart in a Competitive Work Environment.”
    Past notable speakers: Dr. Norman Vincent Peale, world-renowned author, minister, and father of the “power of positive thinking;” Brian L. Stafford, director of the U.S. Secret Service.

    Graduating: 50 students with associate of science degrees in nursing or radiography
    Speaker: Laura Fisher McIntyre, retired Canton City Schools teacher, instructor for University of Akron.  She is the mother of Grammy award-winning singer, Macy Gray. McIntyre will speak on “Lessons in Learning, Life and Careers.”
    Past notable speakers: Renee Powell, professional golfer with the LPGA; Kathy Tschiegg, founder of Central American Medical Outreach.
    STARK STATE COLLEGE

    Graduating: 663
    Speaker: State Rep. Kirk Schuring, R-Jackson Township
    Past notable speakers: Kathy Catazaro-Perry, mayor of Massillon; Robert J. Shearer, co-founder of Shearer’s Foods.
    NEOMED - Northeast Ohio Medical University, Rootstown
    May 19, E.J. Thomas Performing Arts Hall
    Graduating: 113 with a doctor of medicine degree (M.D.), 72 with a doctor of pharmacy degree and one with a master of public health degree.
