CHAMPAIGN -- The Illinois basketball program is back in the market for an assistant coach, after Isaac Chew left the Illini Tuesday for an opening at Marquette.

A Chicago Wells High School graduate who was tabbed as a conduit to the inner-city talent hot bed, Chew left Illinois after spending two months in the program.

Shortly after arriving on campus, Chew admitted to fielding other offers but said, "I want to be here and see this thing through.''

Evidently, the plan changed after Marquette lost assistant Aki Collins to Memphis in a move that became news over the weekend. There are names to consider to replace Chew, who came here after one year at Missouri following a stint at Murray State:

-- Chicago Simeon coach Robert Smith. If there's a more successful prep coach in the city, he's hard to find. Smith has players on his roster coveted by the Illini.

-- Lewis & Clark coach Deon Thomas. The Illini's all-time leading scorer wants to move up from the juco ranks and met with Illini coach John Groce during an on-campus interview earlier this spring.

-- Florida State assistant Dennis Gates. The former Chicago Whitney Young High School star has as background in recruiting and player development. But Illinois may have to crack open the wallet.

-- Former Ohio State assistant Brandon Miller. Expected to be announced as the special assistant to the head coach, the former Butler guard from New Castle, Ind., might climb up the pecking order.

-- Former Illinois State assistant Paris Parham. He has connections in Chicago, where he was a Chicago Public League coach.

-- Former Illini guard Dee Brown. The One-man Fastbreak might be ready to hang up the shoes and overseas career for a whistle. It could be worth a phone call.

NOTES: Ethan Pocic, the four-star offensive line recruit from Lemont and the younger brother of Illinois senior center Graham Pocic, committed to play football at LSU. ... Former Illini guard Chester Frazier will earn $135,000 as a full-time assistant at Kansas State under coach Bruce Weber. ... As part of the School Days promotion, BTN will air a full day of Illinois programming on June 4.  The network will also air all-Illini programming on June 26 and July 17.
