  • GET OUT! Memorial Day events honor service, welcome summer

  • Memorial Day means many things to many people: a time to honor the lives given by our servicemen and women, a time to gather with family, an unofficial kickoff to summer. Area communities will celebrate these themes with local services, parades, patriotic displays, car shows, community breakfasts and more.

  • Memorial Day means many things to many people: a time to honor the lives given by our servicemen and women, a time to gather with family, an unofficial kickoff to summer. Area communities will celebrate these themes with local services, parades, patriotic displays, car shows, community breakfasts and more.
    Here’s a look at some of what is planned locally for Memorial Day, which is Monday.
    Canal Fulton: VFW Post 9795 Memorial Day parade, 1 p.m., leaves Lindsey Concrete at 257 N. Canal St., travels north on Canal Street and continues right on Market Street to City Hall.
    Canton: Canton Memorial Day parade, hosted by Greater Canton Veterans Council, 10 a.m., leaves Timken High School, travels west on Tuscarawas Street W, turns right on Elgin Avenue NW, then right onto Seventh Street NW and continues to McKinley monument for a veterans’ memorial service.
    • Pvt. Heath Warner 5K Memorial Run, 8 a.m., starts and finishes at the McKinley Monument, 800 McKinley Monument Drive NW, Canton. The route will go through the City of Canton Parks System. The run was established by the Scott N. Warner family in honor of Pvt. Heath Warner, who was killed in 2006 in Iraq. Register online at www.ohiochallengeseries.com.     Green: Parade, ceremony, pancake breakfast and car show. Parade kickoff, 10 a.m. from the Green High School parking lot; fire department pancake breakfast, 7 a.m. at Fire Station 1 (at the corner of Massillon and Steese roads). A picnic lunch will be offered. Spectators are asked to sit on the west side only of Massillon Road. Parade route info: www.cityofgreen.org.
    Jackson Township: “Field of Honor/Field of Heroes” display of hundreds of flags, Friday through Monday, Jackson Township Safety Center, 7383 Fulton Drive NW; dedication ceremony 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday in the Center for Performing Arts at Jackson High School, 7600 Fulton Drive NW. Sponsors: Rotary Club of Jackson Township; Jackson-Belden Chamber of Commerce; Jackson Township trustees; the fire, police and parks departments; Jackson Local Schools, and volunteers.     Lake Township: Eighth Annual Memorial Day Observance, honoring the late Daniel P. Stiles (U.S. Marine Corps), Claude Jones (U.S. Army WWII) and Mavin “Bud” Corbin (U.S. Army Air Corps) and Paul F. Naugle Jr. (U.S. Army Air Corps). A reception will follow the 1:30 p.m. ceremony at Uniontown Community Park, 3696 Apollo St. NW. Those attending should bring a folding chair.
    Magnolia: Sandy Valley American Legion Post 432 Memorial Day parade, 10:40 a.m., starting at Finefrock Gordon Funeral Home parking lot, 266 N. Main St. Memorial service, 11 a.m., Magnolia Cemetery, off Harrison Avenue.
    Page 2 of 2 - Marlboro Township: Marlboro Township Volunteer Fire Department lunch at the fire hall, 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.; flyover of C-130 aircraft 1 p.m.; parade step-off, rain or shine, 1 p.m. from Marlboro Avenue and St. Peters Church Road, heading north to Marlboro Cemetery, and Memorial Day program at 2:15 p.m. in the northwest section of the cemetery.
    Massillon: Service presented by the American Legion Post 44, 9 a.m., Calvary Cemetery, 3469 Lincoln Way E. Boy Scout Troop 264 will assist the veterans in the lowering of the flag.
    Moultrie: West Township Memorial Association, march to decorate graves, 2 p.m., recitation of Gettysburg Address, music by Minerva Community Band, followed by chapel service at Moultrie Chapel, state Route 172. Speaker: Col. William Wood of Louisville; invocation by Pastor Paul Hoffmeyer. Ice cream to follow.
    Navarre: VFW Post 5047 Memorial Day parade, 1 p.m., traveling east on Canal to Main Street, north to Wooster Street, east to Columbiana Street NE, to East Union Cemetery.
    North Canton: The North Canton Lions parade, 9 a.m., leaving from the stadium on Seventh Street. A memorial program will follow in Bitzer Park, next to the YMCA Community Building (200 S. Main St.).
    Paris: Paris Memorial and Community Association Memorial Day Weekend, street square dance 7:30 p.m. Sunday, intersection of Route 172 and Paris Avenue (concessions open at 6); parade, 1:30 p.m., forms north of Paris on Paris and Beachwood avenues and continues to Israel Lutheran Church. Service will follow.
    Waynesburg: Sandy Valley American Legion Post 432 Memorial Day parade, 9 a.m., forms at the American Legion Hall, 166 E. Lisbon St. Memorial service at 9:55 a.m. at the Sandy Valley Cemetery.
