  • The first of its kind in the Stark County area, the Joie de Vivre Laser and Medical Spa opened in Canton in late May. Amy Reilly, RN is the owner and operator of the new medical spa and Dr. Michael S. Gurney is the medical director. There are also two staff members, Sarah McKnight and Holly Burner who are certified medical aestheticians and Burner is also a licensed massage therapist.
The unique and specialized spa offers hCG medical weight loss programs, dermal fillers, hair reductions, laser tattoo removal, chemical peels, injectables such as Botox and Juvederm, fractional laser skin resurfacing,  laser anti-aging treatments, 10-step acne programs and customized facials. The spa is the vision and dream of Reilly."
“I've been a nurse a long time and I've always had skin issues my whole life,” Reilly said. “Plus, aging and sun damage skin problems are whole other issues. There is a big need in this area for medical aesthetics.”
Reilly got the name for the spa from a boat named the same thing. She looked up the meaning of the name and found it is French for the joy of life.
“When you look good, you feel good and you effect joy in your life,” Reilly said.
According to Reilly, the spa is cutting edge and unique because of the use of the lasers. It is a spa where medicine meets beauty. A medical spa provides medical services in a spa setting. Services are completed using state-of-the-art, FDA-approved equipment and lasers. The purpose of a medical spa is to help patients and customers enhance their appearance while promoting all around personal health.
The spa is located in the same building as the Gastroenterology Specialists, Inc. in  Canton. There are several treatment rooms and a nicely decorated lobby area.
The spa treatments are conducted in the rooms at the front of the spa, and medical treatment rooms are near the back of the spa. Joie de Vivre also offers facials including a time-saver facial, organic facials and customized facials. Customers can also get a customized massage of 30 or 60 minutes targeted to problem muscle groups.
In addition to medical spa services, Joie de Vivre (JDV) will be offering information and educational seminars.

“The lobby is used for the waiting area, plus it will be used to host  educational and other events,” McKnight said.
Reilly is a Jackson High School and Kent State University graduate. Along with 20 years in nursing experience, she is certified in laser medical aesthetics and anti-aging injectables.
Dr. Gurnery has practiced medicine in Northeast Ohio for over 14 years. He is a member of the International Association of Physicians in Aesthetic Medicine and a member of the American Gastroenterology Association and a trustee for the Stark County Medical Society.
