WHAT IS IT? The expansion and transformation of St. Stephen Martyr Lutheran Church as Dressler Road NW and Fulton Drive in Jackson Township.
HOW LONG HAS IT BEEN GOING ON? In April, construction was finished, turning the sanctuary 180 degrees. The Rev. Bruce R. Roth said the church has beautiful stained glass windows, and the congregation used to walk by it coming into church. Turning the sanctuary around put the stained glass in the forefront. “It really makes a great background for the altar,” Roth said. A new Kegg organ has pipes that “cascade” down from the windows, he said.
WHAT DO YOU NEED TO KNOW? The second phase is under way. It will create a central gathering space, along with space for education, offices, restrooms, music and youth activities to “enhance worship,” Roth said. “What we’re really creating is a Main Street down the middle of the building,” he said. “I’m a big proponent of environmental evangelism. Create a space where people want to be.” The $1.8 million project, will bring the building’s floor space to 22,380 square feet, “or about half an acre,” Roth said.
