  • A week before he walked into an Akron hospital room and allegedly shot his wife, John Wise dialed 911 from the couple’s brick bungalow and told a Massillon fire dispatcher that she was “non-responsive” and needed immediate medical attention.
During the July 28 call, Wise identified himself as being a resident at 227 Hawthorne Ave. NE and reported that his wife, Barbara, was having a “spasm” or “attack.” Wise ended the brief call by telling the dispatcher to “hurry.”
A recording of the call was obtained by The Independent from the Regional
Emergency Dispatch Center in Jackson Township. The call sheds some light on the medical condition that led to Barbara Wise’s hospitalization in the intensive care unit at Akron General Medical Center.
Hospital officials have declined to say what she was being treated for, citing patient privacy laws. Akron police have said the Saturday night incident may have been a mercy killing.
“There were some very serious medical issues,” said Craig Morgan, deputy chief prosecutor at the Akron City Prosecutor’s Office, who declined to be more specific.
The Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed Tuesday that Barbara Wise, 66, died as the result of a single gunshot wound to the head and ruled her death a homicide after performing an autopsy.
Authorities say Wise was visiting his wife in the hospital’s intensive care unit when he shot her at least once in the head with a handgun. The shooting occurred at 8:45 p.m. Saturday. Barbara Wise was pronounced dead around 10:20 a.m. Sunday by the Medical Examiner’s Office.
John Wise, 66, is charged with attempted aggravated murder in connection with the shooting, but that charge is expected to be upgraded to murder in light of the Medical Examiner’s ruling.
Bond was set at $1 million Tuesday during John Wise’s first appearance in Akron Municipal Court. John Wise, who is being held at the Summit County Jail, was arraigned via a video feed from the jail. He would have to post 10 percent, or $100,000, of the total bond to be released from jail. Wise appeared to be confused at the charge and asked visiting Judge Marvin Shapiro whether his wife was, indeed, dead. The judge didn’t answer his question but said he would soon have an attorney who could provide the information he sought.
A second video hearing is scheduled this morning to address any issues related to bond. John Wise’s newly-appointed attorney, Andrea Whitaker, could not be reached for comment Tuesday afternoon.
A murder charge could be filed within a week, Morgan said, following a review of the evidence. It’s possible the case could be presented to the Summit County Prosecutor’s Office for a direct indictment, the standard procedure for felony cases filed in the county.
Page 2 of 2 - “We will take our time looking over everything. He is not going anywhere at this time,” Morgan said. “... The charge as it is, is a good charge. I doubt seriously it is the end charge.”
A hospital employee who called 911 following the shooting described the alleged gunman as “a heavy-set man with a beard.” The caller told the dispatcher that the man had been visiting a patient in room 3201.
At one point, the caller, who was hiding in another room, said she could hear screaming.
“I don’t know what’s going on ... I hear people yelling. I hear commotion,” the unidentified caller said. “I think they need my help. I think I need to go out. Seriously, I think someone’s (dying).”
