  • Funeral services for longtime township volunteer and veterans advocate George  A. Pounders have been set for June 9.
Calling hours will be held at from 2-5 p.m. at Hopkins Lawver funeral home, 547 Canton Road, Akron. A memorial service immediately follows at the funeral home with a celebration of Pounders’ life to be held at 6 p.m. at the Springfield Township Senior Center.
Pounders, 63, died May 29 of heart trouble. He was a Goodyear retiree, and had served as a volunteer firefighter for Springfield Township and was a dog warden for the city of Tallmadge in the 1980s.  He was a 1966 graduate of Springfield High School and maintained an avid interest in school and township affairs. He ran unsuccessfully for a seat on the Springfield School Board and was a regular letter writer to The Suburbanite.
“George was born and raised in Springfield Township,” his sister,  Elva Pounders said. “He lived in the same house his whole life and knew everything that went on with everyone.
    “He loved his town.”
Pounders was probably best known for his interest in veterans affairs.  Two days before his death, he recited names of his neighbors who lost their lives in service of their country in Springfield’s annual Memorial Day observance. Pounders also was one of the founders of a regular luncheon of WWII veterans.
He is survived by his sister, Elva Pounders, of Springfield Township, and Marilyn Cunningham, of Freeport, Ohio.
He is preceded in death by parents Braxton and Emily Pounders, of Springfield Township, brothers Braxton “Buster” Pounders, Hugh Pounders and sister Francis Pounders.
