Congratulations to Coventry for its successful passage of the bond/permanent improvement levy on May 7th! Thank you to everyone who worked so diligently for our children!
Perhaps you saw the Vote No ad in last week’s Suburbanite buried in amongst all of the wonderful positive things about the Coventry Local School District. Unfortunately, my name appeared, without consent, in the negative ad published by the group Citizens Against Unfair Taxation. It included an out-of-context partial quote from a letter I wrote earlier to the South Side Leader in response to a letter from Mr. James Howe.
I cannot allow anyone to take something I have said, quote it out of context, use it in a negative way, and then question if I was lying without responding. I totally supported this levy and most certainly voted YES, and I am proud and delighted that it finally passed. I did not give any permission for my words to be part of a negative campaign. Any words I put into writing were to support this levy.
Let me make it perfectly clear that the quote attributed to me was an excerpt from a whole explanatory paragraph. This is the actual quote: “Yes, Mr. Howe, it is absolutely true that the district spends more per pupil than what the state funds for open enrollment students. It also spends far more for the resident students than what the state funds. That’s why we pay property taxes!”
The election is over and I hope we will all be able to move forward and live with the results. I believe that acts of this type may have done permanent damage to this community. We may never get back to being a united, proud community after this ugliness. I sincerely hope that the passage of this levy will enable all of us to move forward together as proud Comets!
