Illinois dismissed reserve linebacker Evan Frierson from the team after his arrest on a felony aggravated battery over the weekend.

A sophomore from Washington, D.C., Frierson pleaded innocent. His court appearance is Dec. 21.

"As I have always done, I review each situation on an individual basis and make sure I have all the information,'' coach Ron Zook said in a statement released by the university. "After a full review, I think it's in Evan's best interest to concentrate on his academics and his legal issues, and he no longer remains a part of our football program.''

After playing in all 12 games last season and earning the starting assignment after a sesaon-ending neck injury to middle linebacker Martez Wilson, Frierson played sparingly this season. He has six tackles in nine games.
