GOOD WIFE FURNITURE: -- 'Good Wife,' great furniture line -- There are certain movies in which the rooms are as interesting as the characters. One that comes to mind is Nancy Meyers' 2009 film "It's Complicated." The California ranch home that Meryl Streep's character lives in was nearly as enticing as the storyline -- Alec Baldwin plays the philandering husband who wants her back. Scripps Howard News Service

ASK THE PLUMBER: Cook like a pro with a 'pot-filler faucet' -- Q: I love to cook for friends and family, especially during the holidays. So I was thinking about asking my husband for a "pot-filler faucet" installed in my kitchen for my big gift. Can you give me some information on these specialty faucets and how they are installed? This way, I can make a nice sales pitch to my husband and just maybe he will surprise me! -- Ann, Iowa. SHNS

LOOKING UP: The universe in my window - The next clear, cold night - those adjectives often go together - enjoy the view from your home observatory. You may not live under a traditional rotating dome, and you might not even have a telescope, but if you have a window facing the open sky, you have an observatory. By Peter Becker, Hawley, Pa.

AUTHOR INTERVIEW: The Readers’ Writers: Award-winning author Lois Greiman - Lois Greiman was born on a North Dakota cattle ranch. After graduating high school, she opted for the “southern” clime of Minnesota to train and show Arabian horses. Since that time she’s raised three children and written stories in numerous genres, including romance (humor, contemporary, historical, paranormal), children’s and mysteries. She’s also amassed a list of awards and honors for her storytelling abilities. And certainly, with past jobs as a high fashion model, veterinary assistant and fitness instructor, Greiman has a wealth of her own experiences to draw from for inspiration. KILLING THEM SOFTLY REVIEW: Movie review: 'Killing Them Softly' will bore you mightily - There isn’t a second of “Killing Them Softly” (the title is a reference to Jackie’s preference of offing his victims from a distance so not to get too personally involved) that’s remotely fresh, even with Brad Pitt's terrific tongue-in-cheek portrayal of a cynical, urbane mob assassin. By Al Alexander, The Patriot Ledger.

BRUCE: Springsteen biographer Carlin gets to the bottom of 'Bruce' - Let’s get this out of the way right off the bat: Peter Ames Carlin is no Albert Goldman. Unlike the late slash-and-burn biographer who drew brickbats for his controversial books on Elvis Presley and John Lennon, Carlin – whose new Bruce Springsteen biography “Bruce” is a New York Times bestseller – is actually a fan of his subject. And not a recently converted one either. By Peter Chianca, North of Boston.

PHILIP MADDOCKS: Lawmakers to save economy, solve illegal immigration by moving fiscal cliff to the border — Senior lawmakers said Thursday that they were moving quickly to save the U.S. from certain financial ruin and to secure the nation’s southern border by relocating the fiscal cliff to the boundary with Mexico, where the trillions of dollars in tax increases and automatic spending cuts – should they go into effect – would only be felt by those trying to gain entry into this country illegally. By Philip Maddocks, Framingham, Mass.

Business

ERIC P BLOOM: The importance of process measurement - There is an old IBM advertisement.  I don’t remember the exact year, but I believe it was about 15 years ago.  The premise of the advertisement was that a person runs into his boss’s office all excited that he saved the company a nickel (it may have been a dime, I don’t exactly remember).  His boss then says “Big deal, so what if you saved the company 5 cents.”  The employee then answers back by saying “You don’t understand, I just saved a nickel a transaction on 5,000 transactions a day!” By Eric P. Bloom, GHNS.
