  • Van Nostran-Young and Associates in Hartville and the Lake athletic department have selected the “Student-Athletes of the Month” for April. Named to receive the awards are junior softball player, McKenna Stephens and junior track and field participant, Phil Burt.
McKenna is off to a fast start at shortstop for the Blue Streaks’ varsity softball team. She leads the team with a .487 batting average and has been playing nearly flawless defense in the field. McKenna committed to Michigan State University earlier this school year for softball (2013-14 season). She also was a stand out on this past season’s record-breaking girls basketball team. Off the court, she is student in the health tech prep program, along with being an office aide. McKenna carries a 3.494 GPA.
Phil has been a multi-purpose performer for the Blue Streaks this spring on the track. Earlier in the month, he was a part of four first-place finishes in the Bill Barry Invitational at Tallmadge High School. During the meet, Phil was a member of the 4x100 and the 4x400 relay teams which finished first and set meet records. During the same meet, he personally finished first in the 110 Hurdles (15.4 seconds) and first in the 300 Hurdles (40.4 seconds). “Phil has been an outstanding leader both on the track and in the classroom,” Blue Streak track coach Matt Pinion said. Between his running, his school work and working a part-time job, he has maintained a 3.5 grade point average.
