The more we get used to this adrenaline-driven state, the less we can quiet our mind and body. We become hooked on feeling hyped and somewhat agitated. In fact, I think a lot of people have become so accommodated to their stress that they wear it like a badge of honor.

The world sometimes just seems like a tornado of energy –– a wild blast of impulses that just doesn’t give you a chance to unwind.

I was in a restaurant a few nights ago with my partner, looking forward to a nice quiet dinner. However, the music was so loud that I had to scream at him to pass the salt. It felt like torture.

I finally asked the waiter if he could turn it down a little, and before he did, he looked at me like I was not in my right mind. After all, you should be able to enjoy yourself even if you’re in the midst of a din of madness. Right?

Sometimes all I want to do is scream and yell, “Enough already! Give us a break.” The noise is just a piece of the never-ending cycle of stress that has enveloped how most people live their lives. What most individuals don’t realize is that the way we live our lives today often brings about the body’s fight-or-flight response –– something that is necessary when we are faced with danger, but not useful for normal daily activities.

Try having a conversation today without first having to hear a list of stuff that whoever your talking to has to do. Who cares? Obviously, they do, and they think you should, too. We have gotten to a place where a lot of stress makes some folks feel important.

After all, if I have a lot to do, it must mean that I will soon attain a higher status in the world. Frankly, all I think it means is that you will probably die sooner since too much stress creates a lot of physical and mental illnesses. They may even find you sitting in your car in the midst of a text that is sharing your latest “to-do” list.

Maybe it’s time to give yourself a dope slap so you can wake up and smell the roses. I’m sure some of the people around you would like to. You can be assured that no one will be reading your emails at your funeral.
