  • Local communities will mark Memorial Day with tributes to the sacrifices of military servicemen and women through ceremonies, parades, patriotic displays, community breakfasts and other events. Here’s a look at some of what is planned in the area.

  • Local communities will mark Memorial Day with tributes to the sacrifices of military servicemen and women through ceremonies, parades, patriotic displays, community breakfasts and other events.
    Here’s a look at some of what is planned in the area. All events are Monday, unless otherwise noted.
    Canal Fulton
    • Canal Fulton VFW Post 9795 parade, forms at Lindsey Concrete and steps off at 1 p.m., traveling north on Canal Street, turning onto Market Street and ending at City Hall with a short ceremony.
    • Greater Canton Veterans Council Memorial Day Parade, 10 a.m., leaving Timken High School, travels west down Tuscarawas Street W, right on Elgin Avenue NW, right onto Seventh Street NW and ending at McKinley Monument, veterans observance will follow immediately.
    • Ceremony honoring military, veterans, police and firefighters, 2 p.m., Crystal Park Memorial Garden, corner of Mahoning Road NE and Royal Avenue NE.
    • Pancake breakfast, 7 a.m., Fire Station No. 1, corner of Massillon and Steese roads; Memorial Day Parade, 9 a.m., leaving from the Green High School parking lot; ceremony at 10:45 a.m. at Green Veterans Memorial Park; community picnic, 11:30 a.m., John Torok Senior/Community Center.     Jackson Township
    • “Field of Honor/Field of Heroes” display of hundreds of flags, on display from 11 a.m. May 24 through 1 p.m. May 27 at the Jackson Township Safety Center, 7383 Fulton Drive NW. Opening ceremony at 10 a.m. Saturday at Jackson High School Performing Arts Auditorium, 7600 Fulton Drive NW.     • Pvt. Heath Warner Memorial 4-mile run and 2-mile Family Fun Walk, “Running to Remember,” Saturday, Jackson High School, 7600 Fulton Drive NW, Jackson Township; register online at www.pvtheathwarner.com and www.ohiochallengeseries.com; day-of registration ($35) at 6:30 a.m. at Jackson High School; race at 8 a.m., awards ceremony at 9:30 a.m.
    Lake Township
    • All Veterans’ Memorial observance; veterans Ben Rochford, Thomas “Tom” Harman, Robert L. Keener and David Wilson Mount will be honored, 1:30 p.m., Uniontown Community Park, 3696 Apollo St. NW. Refreshments will follow in the community center.
    • Parade, forms at Finefrock-Gordon funeral home, 266 N. Main St., at 10:40 a.m.; memorial service at 11 a.m. at Magnolia Cemetery, off Harrison Avenue. Hosted by Sandy Valley American Legion Post 432.
    Marlboro Township
    • Lunch at the Marlboro Township Volunteer Fire Department, 11 a.m.; parade steps off at 1 p.m., rain or shine, from St. Peters Church Road, heading north to Marlboro Cemetery, and Memorial Day program after the parade in the northwest section of the cemetery. Speaker: Alliance Law Director Andy Zumbar.

    • Memorial Day Parade, 9:30 a.m. beginning at Veterans Memorial Park on First Street SE, moving north on First Street, west on Lincoln Way, south on Erie Street, to Massillon Cemetery; ceremony, 10:45 a.m. Info: 330-833-2483.
    • Memorial Day service by American Legion Post 44, 9 a.m., Calvary Cemetery, 3469 Lincoln Way E. Boy Scout Troop 264 will assist veterans in the lowering of the flag. Info: 330-832-1866.
    • West Township Memorial Association-sponsored service at Moultrie Chapel on state Route 172, two miles east of New Franklin; march to decorate the graves at 2 p.m., led by Don V. Cross American Legion Post 357 from Minerva; program speaker is retired Army Lt. Col. Larry Ashbaugh; service includes recitation of the Gettysburg Address, music by the Minerva Community Band, singing and ice cream.
    • Holy Family Parish Memorial Day bike contest. Registration starts at 11 a.m. at the Navarre Civic Center, judging at noon. Prizes will be awarded in age categories and best family of bikes. All contestants are asked to ride in the Navarre Memorial Day parade. Info: 330-879-5900.
    • Memorial Day parade, 1 p.m., heading north on Main Street, east to Wooster Street, north on Columbiana Street NE, east on Fourth Street and ending with a ceremony at the cemetery.
    North Canton
    • Memorial Day parade, sponsored by the Lions Club, 9 a.m., leaving from Hoover High School stadium, turning down Seventh Street to Main Street to the square, turning east on Maple Street. A brief ceremony will follow at Bitzer Park.
    Paris Township
    • Parade, 1:30 p.m., traveling south on Paris Avenue SE from Paris Avenue and Beechwood Avenue; ceremony at Paris Cemetery immediately following. Speaker: Col. Lanse Leach, U.S. Army, retired.
    • Parade, forms at 9 a.m. at American Legion Hall, 166 E. Lisbon St.; memorial service at 9:55 a.m. at Sandy Valley Cemetery. Sponsored by Sandy Valley American Legion Post 432.
