  • Jackson Local Board of Education meeting for May 21

  • KEY ACTION  Anthony Butch was approved as the new head coach for the girls’ varsity basketball team. Butch is also a mathematics teacher at Jackson Memorial Middle School. He has 10 years of coaching experience. The past four years he has been coaching at Jackson Local.
    He was head coach for junior varsity girls for two years and also coached the freshmen and eighth-grade girls’ basketball teams.
    Before coming to Jackson Local Schools, Butch coached at Springfield Local in the Akron area as junior varsity head coach and head varsity assistant. And at John F. Kennedy in Warren he was head varsity assistant and in Minerva Local a varisity assistant.
    Butch was selected from eight others that interviewed for the position. He was the only one who applied from Jackson Local. His salary for coaching is $6,800 for the season.
    DISCUSSION  Superintendent Christopher DiLoreto said, “Anthony clearly has a vision for the girls’ basketball team and talked about three pillars for building the team including dedication, hard work and representing the district with class during the interview. We’re excited to have him coaching the girls’ varsity team.”
    OTHER ACTION  Heard the district has received a certificate from the Ohio Department of Education recognizing Jackson Local with an Excellent with Distinction rating.
    • Approved the Ohio High School Athletic Association resolution to participate for the 2013-14 school year.
    • Approved the calamity day alternative make-up plan for the next school year.
    The state allows five day to make up missed days throughout the school year. Schools offering online make-up assignments have an additional three calamity days. Jackson Local’s make-up plan offers online make-up assignments and the district receives eight calamity days for make-up.
    • Approved various school fees for classes, sports, art and other fees for the high school, middle school and elementary schools. Fees will remain the same as the previous year.
