  •  In his first year of retirement from Ohio Power Co., Bob Doerschuk rode to the top of Stark County Bicycle Club’s mileage leaders in 2011.
Doerschuk finished the year with 10,964 miles. Al Jones, who had led the club mileage for three previous years, finished second in 2011 with 9,879.
Margie Baker, who has led the women’s mileage statistics for the last five years and eight out of the last nine years, again topped women riders with 9,274. Peg Stoner, the only other woman to lead the women’s mileage standings since 1998, finished second with 8,677.
Rookie of the year was Bill Mishler, who rode 6,667 miles last year.
Club member Fred Woodward led the most rides, 230.
During a ceremony last month at Tozzi’s on 12th, retired teacher John Snively was presented Stark County Bicycle Club’s President’s Award of Special Recognition for being a “cartographer extraordinaire.”
“We couldn’t ride without your maps,” the program for the club’s banquet told the winner, who is the club’s cartographer and map librarian.
Mike Burns, who operates the club’s safety team, was thanked for the programs that he and volunteers put on in 2011 throughout Stark County. John Patterson, Adopt-A-Highway chairman, also was thanked for controlling litter along the club’s length of “adopted” highway.
    MORE RIDING
On top of his club rides, Doerschuk also rode in the Philadelphia to Ocean City, J.J., “MS 150,” which actually was 181 miles round trip, he said. And, he rode more than 400 miles in “a very hot and hilly” ride called “Bike Virginia.”
“Toss in a cross country trip ... (averaging 112 miles a day),” he said, and it was “a great year of riding.”
Even without doing the math, there is no doubt.
When Stark County Bicycle Club meets at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 14 at Rafter’s Bar & Grill at Meadowlake Golf & Swim Club at 1211 39th St. NE, Doerschuk will present a program titled “Bike the USA in 33 Days.”
