The Legends Pub and Grille took home first place honors at the National Hamburger Festival in Akron for its Bulldog burger.
The first place hamburger award goes to … Legends Sports Pub & Grille in Green.
It seems a fitting award for the restaurant with the saying, “Walk in a rookie, leave a legend.” After all, Don Boyer and his staff entered the National Hamburger contest in downtown Akron as “rookies” and left with two legendary burgers. The Bulldog burger won first place in the Traditional Hamburger category, and the Buffalo Dip burger secured second place in the Creative Hamburger category.
“We started specializing in burgers about a year ago,” said Boyer who purchased the eatery four years ago. “In addition to the traditional hamburgers, we now have 10 specialty hamburgers on the menu.”
The National Hamburger Festival was held Aug. 17 and 18.
According to the hamburgerfestival.com website, this was the seventh year for the National Hamburger Festival. More than 120,000 hamburger fans have attended the event that boasts having one of the “largest assortments of hamburgers ever assembled in one place.”
Boyer said the event was a great experience for the restaurant. The team got to go up on stage to accept the awards.
“The experience was incredible,” Boyer said. “It was an honor for us to win, and I thank everyone who voted for us. We make our hamburgers fresh everyday, and we’re happy that the judges noticed.”
The Bulldog has an 8-ounce patty and comes with lettuce, tomato and onion. The burger, named in honor of the Green Bulldogs, was selected as a winner through a blind taste test by the National Hamburger Festival judges.
The juicy burger comes with a side of French fries. Patrons will find it offered as a special every Monday.
BUFFALO DIP BURGER
The new specialty burger is also an 8-ounce patty. It comes smothered with provolone cheese along with the eateries’ Buffalo Dip, ranch dressing and celery and a side order of French fries. The mouth-watering burger was created by kitchen manager Jake Sundheimer and Bryan Monastra, the Legends food and beverage director.
“We had the Buffalo Dip on the menu already so we decided to try it with a hamburger along with the cheese and the ranch dressing,” Sundheimer said, “and the combination became a winner.”
The burger will be available on the menu beginning Oct. 1.
