  • Experience will lead Jackson girls tennis into the 2013 season.
Head coach Keith Kohmann’s team will be senior-laden with Maria Thomas, Michelle Dilling, Cassidy Clay and Danielle Todd comprising the core of the squad. Add juniors Tessa Hill and Emma Schoeppner to the mix and there is a wealth of experience on tap for the Polar Bears. Sophomore Sarah Brown is the only underclassman to earn a spot on the varsity and, with both A and B teams for the varsity and a full junior varsity team, there is even more depth to draw from in the event of injury.
Hill begins the year with a target on her back as the reigning Player of the Year in the Federal League and a state qualifier as a sophomore last season. With her postseason success of a year ago to rely on, Hill is expected by her coaches to take another step forward in the No. 1 singles spot.
She should have help from Thomas, a three-year letterwinner, who has also been named All-Federal League each year of her high school career.
“Maria will provide stability in the doubles lineup,” Kohmann said.
Dilling was the third member of last year’s team to earn all-league recognition and Schoeppner showed flashes of promise in limited varsity experience in 2012. In order for the team to repeat its success of last year, her continued development will be a factor, especially against the deeper teams on Jackson’s schedule.
The remainder of the varsity team competed on the B squad last year and will be stepping up to the A team for the first time.
“We are looking to get some new varsity A players experience early in the season,” Kohmann said. “Hopefully, those players adapt to their new roles and our veterans provide leadership. If this happens and the team gains confidence along the way, we will (achieve) our team goal ahead of us.”
That goal is another Federal League Championship, followed by a deep run in the Ohio Tennis Coaches Team Tournament.
