  • A limited edition Portagelakesopoly custom Monopoly-style board game is being sold as a fundraiser for the Portage Lakes Kiwanis. The board game features various Portage Lakes organizations, businesses, area schools and individuals who have bought a spot on the custom game board.
The idea was brought to the attention of the Portage Lakes Kiwanis by members Jeff Goodwin and Sue Harding who attended a Kiwanis District Meeting in Columbus on fundraising ideas and techniques.
An idea that appealed to them was the Monopoly-style board game and Goodwin presented it to the Kiwanis members. Dana Roderick, the leading force behind making Portagelakesopoly a reality,  said  “Everyone just sat there and no one spoke up.”
Roderick quickly jotted down the information, and later researched the how to produce the custom game. She realized the potential profitability and knew that funds could be raised through not only selling spaces on the board but also profits could come from game sales.
At the next Kiwanis meeting Roderick presented her findings to the Kiwanis Board who granted her permission to proceed.  She gathered a sales team to help her that included Esther Cole, Al Grzeschik and Jeff Goodwin to sell the 40 board properties.
“The project totally funded itself,” Roderick said.
Everything, it seemed, went smoothly. It wasn’t until the game went to the printer that Roderick had a moment of panic.
“Are the 350 games I ordered going to sell?” Roderick remembers worrying.
To date, close to half of the games ordered have been sold.
Games are $25 each and can be ordered by contacting Dana Roderick at 330-990-7818 or email d1687@hotmail.com.  Games ae also available at Akron Coin.
