  • A chance to topple the reigning queens of Federal League softball quickly turned from an opportunity to an uphill climb for the Lake softball team on Tuesday.
Facing unbeaten North Canton Hoover, the Blue Streaks fell behind early and were never able to catch up in a 14-2 defeat as the Vikings ran their record to 23-0 and 10-0 in league play.
The two-time defending Division I state champions leapt ahead with a first-inning grand slam by talented junior shortstop Jenna Lilley and rode a complete-game effort by Tara Thacker to the win. Lilley's sixth home run of the season gave Thacker more than enough run support to work with and by the time the Hoover scoring blitz ended after the top of the third, the Blue Streaks trailed 14-0.
The loss dropped the Blue Streaks to 10-8 and 4-4 in league play, but represented an improvement from being no-hit and shut out in their last battle with Thacker.
Lake's lone runs on the day came in the bottom of the fourth, when junior right fielder Kari Snyder blasted a two-run home run to score herself and senior Katelyn King. The Blue Streak managed five hits against Thacker, who improved her record to 14-0.
Hoover posted 17 hits on the day, with Lilley leading the way with 6 RBI.
