“What is Brigadoon?” you might ask. According to cast member Connor Reese, “Brigadoon” is a “Love story for the ages.”
Reese, a senior at Jackson, plays the character of Tommy Albright. This part was made famous in the movie rendition of “Brigadoon” by Gene Kelly.
“Brigadoon” takes place in Scotland when two American hunters, Tommy Albright and Jeff Douglas, stumble upon a town. The intrigue and mystery of this town, Brigadoon, is that it appears for only one day every 100 years. The townspeople of Brigadoon cannot leave their home but all outsiders can visit on that day and even become permanent residents. If the citizens leave Brigadoon, they, along with the town will disappear forever. American hunter Tommy Albright meets and falls for native Fiona MacLaren. After a questionable death occurs, Douglas convinces Albright to leave Brigadoon and return to America. Many more twists and turns will unfold in this unusual love story.
Still don’t get it? When asked to compare it to another musical, Frederick Locker, choral and musical director, responded with, “West Side Story, if anything.” Locker’s reason is that of the similar love story which includes a tragic death.
Since one might wonder what is so special about “Brigadoon.” Several cast members told what they like about the musical. Rachel Szeles, a sophomore, who plays Meg Brockie stated, “It is romantic, comedic, and dramatic. It is everything!”
Reese mentioned, “The music is beautiful because it was written in a different era.”
Another cast member, senior Hayley Shelton, who plays Jean MacLaren said, “It takes the cast out of our comfort zone with the Scottish accents. It is not your typical musical.”
Junior Brianne Campbell, who plays Reese’s love interest Fiona MacLaren, added, “It is a fresh look on an older time,” and, “I like the connection and relationship between the characters and actors.”
The romance and Scottish heritage aren’t the only reason “Brigadoon” is unique to Locker. In fact, he let us in on a little secret. Throughout high school Locker took part in many musicals. He worked on crews and even played instruments in the pit. Interestingly, the first musical Locker actually acted in was “Brigadoon.” Locker also said, “I vowed to do this show before I retire.” Locker is on his way to accomplishing his aspiration. Help Locker achieve his goal and make the cast and crew’s time worthwhile.
