Weekend tip: National Cheesecake Day

This Saturday is National Cheesecake Day. You can celebrate by making your own cheesecake, buying one from a bakery or eating a slice at your favorite restaurant. Don’t go for the ordinary, though. Cheesecake comes in many different flavors, so try something different!

Dinner idea: Broken Rice Mold

2 pork chops, fat and bone removed

1⁄4 cup soy sauce

1 teaspoon curry or five-spice powder

1 teaspoon honey

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 cup toasted broken rice, uncooked (can be found at Asian markets)

Cut pork in 3-inch strips. Mix the soy, honey, garlic and the spice or curry in a bowl for the marinade. Use half the mixture to marinate meat for two hours. Coat meat thoroughly with broken rice. Pack tightly in an oiled bowl (a soup bowl works well). Add remaining marinade. Put a plate on top, invert and place on a rack in a wok with water. Steam for 90 minutes or until rice is set. Un-mold, and serve on a bed of shredded lettuce with soy sauce on the side. Note: Marinated chicken works well with this.
