  • One of our long time members of the Portage Lakes Fitness Center, Frank Ake, recently celebrated his 95th Birthday.
Approximately 50 members were on hand to help Frank cut his enormous birthday cake. The theme on the cake was "Frank, You Have Done It All !!" There were airplanes and motorcycles, soldiers and an 18-wheeler scattered across the cake.
When Frank was a young man he purchased a Harley Davidson motorcycle and traveled around the United States. When the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, Frank sold his beloved Harley and joined the service to fight for his country. He was stationed at Tinian where he became a mechanic servicing the largest planes in our fleet, the B 29 bombers. He quickly became the crew chief.
When the war was over and Frank returned home, he again purchased a Harley and continued riding the countryside. But, he couldn't get airplanes out of his mind, so once again, he sold his Harley, only this time he learned to fly an airplane and purchased a small Cessna 147. One of his many accomplishments was a long distance flight to the West Coast.
Frank turned to driving trucks and drove long distance across the states. At one time Frank owned a fleet of three 18-wheelers. During his time as a truck driver, in 1954, Frank met a young woman raising four small children on her own. Ida was running a small restaurant that lots of truck drivers frequented. To make a long story short, Frank married Ida and those four children, Maria, Sandy, Linda and Jimmy, quickly became his own. Ida and Frank recently celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary.
Their four children hosted a party at home for family and friends to celebrate Frank's birthday.
The members of the Fitness Center are looking forward to another celebration when Ida turns 94 in the fall. Frank and Ida are long time Portage Lakes residents and now reside at Chambrel in Montrose. Frank still makes the trip everyday to work out and spend time with his friends at the Fitness Center. We are truly blessed to have them in our presence and also call them friends.
